Measuring in at just over 2m wide, this lovely canvas advertising banner for Wills's Gold Flake Cigarettes is an impressive piece. It's come directly from an old sweetshop that sadly closed down last year and a lifetime of hanging indoors has left it in lovely original condition; the lettering is clear and the colours bright.
The banner was produced by Joseph Bryant Ltd of Bristol and probably dates from the 1920s/'30s as the typeface and colour scheme for Gold Flake cigarettes was revised in the 1940s.
As mentioned above the condition is very good - all four copper eyelets remain in good condition, there are no rips or tears, though some fold marks are visible (these would lessen after a period of being hung). The canvas has worn to a rich, orange colour, tainted only by slight water marks along the lower edge.
This banner is an excellent way to fill a wall for relatively little money and it's original condition would make it ideal as a prop or as part of a vintage theme. The dimensions are 201.5cm wide, 89cm high and 2mm thick.
