FRANKLYN'S SUPERFINE SHAGG ADVERTISING SHOW CARD

£999
Here we have a very unusual (I've never seen another) Franklyn's Tobacco advertising show card promoting the company's 'superfine shagg' (loose tobacco) which got its name from the finely cut strands appearing like 'shag' fabric.
Some rather fantastic innuendo aside, this is a wonderfully fine piece of vintage advertising - the level of detail in the pictorial of the tobacco packet and to the coats-of-arms is art in it's own right. The showcard was issued by the Imperial Tobacco Co. who formed in 1901 and it's likely that this card was produced soon after the formation of the tobacco conglomerate.
It's always lovely to find pieces of paper advertising/ephemera like this that have survived at all, let alone in such good condition. This example is near perfect with just a couple of minor surface scuffs (which I've tried to show in the third photo) but these are only really visible under a raking light. Otherwise the colours remain strong and even the original hanging string is present.
The card measures 32cm wide x 26cm high and is around 3mm thick.
