This Franklyn's tobacco advertising tray dates to the 1920s - promoting the company's 'fine shagg' (loose tobacco) which got its name from the finely cut strands appearing like 'shag' fabric.

Supposedly the early 20th century was a more innocent era, where the word 'shag'/'shagg' could be printed boldly without any misconstruing, however when the 'fine shagg' is described as 'good to the end', you've really got to wonder just how innocent these advertisements were!

This litho printed tin tray remains in relatively decent condition, especially for it's age. It's red background is slightly faded and there's some surface scratching/light corrosion, but the text remains legible and I'd consider more 'nicely aged' than damaged. The tray's issuing mark and registration mark are printed along the bottom edge and remain clear and legible.

The tray measures 31cm high x 42cm wide and sits 1.5cm deep.
