This BP Motor Spirit enamel sign dates from the 1920s - the same period as BP's iconic Union Jack signs, this is a rarer variant known as the 'Irish Flash' was produced by Franco Signs for use in Ireland and Scotland where the Union Jack would have been a controversial symbol.

 

Wonderfully vibrant colours and graphics, this double-sided example would have originally had a flange down one side allowing it to be hung perpendicular to the wall, but this has been removed at some point to allow it to be mounted/rested flat against the wall. This is an unusual and early piece of motoring history, the sign is in relatively good condition excepting the loss of the flange, there's some minor patches of enamel loss and some 'nibbling' around the outer edges. It retains a very good surface gloss (see angled photos where I've tried to demonnstrate this).

 

The sign measures 60cm wide x 40cm high.
