A FANTASTIC, LARGE ESSO PETROL FORECOURT SIGN

£999
This impressively large (1.5m wide), plastic Esso sign would've originally illuminated a forecourt some time around the 1960s/'70s. Obviously a fragile material, it's a fairly rare survivor as many fell victim to stones / pellets or were simply thrown away when new signage was introduced.
Produced from a translucent plastic, the sign was designed to be backlit and would most likely have formed one side of a metal casing with neon (perhaps flourecent) tubing behind. Even without the back light it's still a very striking, vibrant piece. The plastic has retained a wonderfully glossy surface and the embossed lettering and domed form highlight this.
Generally the sign has survived in excellent condition, it retains it's metal surround (which would have been used to fix it to the main encasement) and has no notable cracking. There are some surface scuffs and scratches and I suspect that the reverse has had the colours over painted but it's possible that this is how they were produced? Regardless it displays well and makes for a real statement piece.
The sign measures 152cm wide x 111cm high.
