This gorgeous Victorian hallmarked silver locket bears the word Souvenir (French for 'memory') set within a banderole. It's original bale is attached with additional detailing, not often seen. 

 

The locket is hallmarked to Birmingham, 1882  with the maker's mark R & Co. (Probably Rattray & Co.). There are hallmark stamps to the front section, back section and the bale. 

 

The locket would have originally have held photographs of loved ones behind glass. The glass is missing, though could be replaced with relative ease, or a photograph can simply be retained by the metal framework (only present in the rear half of the locket). 

 

The locket measures 6.3cm high inc. bale, 4.4cm high exc. bale x 3.5cm wide x 1.3cm deep.
