This Wills's Capstan (cigarettes), double-sided illuminating glass hanging sign is a wonderfully original, rare survivor and a great example of mid-century advertising. 

 

Capstan cigarettes were originally launched by W.D. & H.O. Wills in 1894, and was one of the most popular brands of cigarettes in the early-twentieth century ... They were Wills's answer to Player's Medium cigarettes. However the brand dwindled in popularity as the health effects of tobacco became more widely known.

 

This illuminating sign / light-box is dated to March 1957 and it remains in fantastically original condition; it's had a few coats of paint over the years (probably as the shop it was being displayed in was redecorated) but this is all part of it's history / charm. It and operates off two standard bulbs - replaceable through the little trap doors located to either side of the light-box and emits a lovely warm glow.

 

The piece measures 76cm wide x 39cm high x 20cm deep.
