An incredible survivor, this Wills's Capstan (cigarettes), double-sided glass hanging sign is a fantastic example of how mesmerisingly effective advertising could be in a pre-digital era. No electronics / screens or motors needed for this vibrant, glossy 3D sign... 

 

Capstan cigarettes were originally launched by W.D. & H.O. Wills in 1894, and was one of the most popular brands of cigarettes in the early-twentieth century ... They were Wills's answer to Player's Medium cigarettes. However the brand dwindled in popularity as the health effects of tobacco became more widely known.

 

This sign made up of two pieces of reverse painted vibrant yellow glass, with the lettering left exposed so that you can look through to anodised blue, embossed metal letters. This is all together in its original metal framework with hanging hooks (which retain their original leather cushioning straps and retaining split pins!). The piece is dated to February 1956 and remains in wonderful, original condition. A very eye-catching piece and a rare survivor.

 

The sign measures 77cm wide x 63cm high x 4cm deep.
