Standing at 48cm tall, this is a good, large example of a late 19th century green glass demijohn / carboy. Typically French or Spanish, these handblown bottles were normally used in vineyards for the transportation of wine (sometimes housed in a wire basket, surrounded by straw, for ease of carrying).

The handblown nature of these bottles gives them a wonderfully unique and naturalistic form which is always very pleasing. This bottle is particularly unusual, as at some point it was discarded to the sea / river where it filled with mud and was buried until it was dug up decades later. This has resulted in the inside of the bottle being coated with mud which has formed fantastic patterns within the glass. The bottle has survived without any notable chips or cracks and the outside is clean, ready for display.

The bottle measures 48cm high x 38cm wide x 27.5cm deep.
