HUNTLEY & PALMERS 'LITERATURE' BOOK BISCUIT TIN

Here we have a very good example of one of Huntley and Palmers' highly desirable 'book' biscuit tins. This biscuit tin is fabricated to look like an eight volume book set of classic literature titles, bound by a leather and buckled carrying strap. There is a small tin strap "bookmark" to open the hinged lid. The sides feature wonderfully detailed faux leatherwork book covers and the top, reverse and base are decorated in a wonderfully vibrant 'marbling' - the base is subtly marked 'Huntley & Palmers Biscuits, Reading & London'
Huntley & Palmers produced their first book tin, 'Library', in 1900, this was followed in 1901 by this example; 'Literature'. The book tins were one of the most popular tins with customers and were manufactured, in ten different variations, until 1924. During this time over 650,000 book tins were produced. This tin was manufactured by Huntley Boorne & Stevens for Huntley & Palmer and printed by the offset litho process.
This is a good, bright example - the front/spines of the books have darkened slightly are there is some paint loss, though the titles of the books remain legible and the gold decoration is largely in tact. There's a slightly denting/creasing to the tin's left side (see photos) and this means a little additional pressure has to be applied to open/close the lid, but this is very minimal and is largely just me being quite fussy... As this tin was initially just packaging, limited numbers survived and even fewer survive in good condition - this is an increasingly scarce blast from the past, highly decorative and wonderfully novel (pun not overly intended).
The tin is 16.5cm wide x 16cm high x 12cm deep.
