"The Sportsman - oldest, best & largest daily" - this small, vibrant double-sided enamel flange sign for the early 20th century sporting newspaper is a lovely piece of enamel advertising. 

 

The double-sided flanged signs were designed to stick out from a shop front at a right-angle so that they could be seen from both directions; the flange is often lost to corrosion, but this example remains good, strong and functional. The sign has retained it's bright red and white enamel layers along with a decent surface gloss and makes for a vibrant piece of vintage advertising. It was produced by Wildman & Meguyer Ltd of Birmingham - one of the earlier and less common manufacturers and is likely to date to the late 1920s / '30s. 

 

A lovely piece of vintage decor or an excellent gift for a modern-day 'Sportsman'. The sign measures 36cm wide x 25.5cm high and the flange is 4cm deep.
