STRIKING, LARGE STEPHENS' INKS ENAMEL SIGN
£0
£999
In 1832 Dr Henry Stephens invented an indelible 'blue-black writing fluid'... This resulted in the foundation of Stephens' Inks; a worldwide company that enjoyed over 150 years of success.
Advertising for Stephens' Inks has developed a strong following in recent years - bold typography along with the iconic ink splatter logo make this popularity easily understandable. Measuring in at just over 1.5m high, this is an impressively large example of their advertising. The sign was produced by Bruton of Palmers Green and the code in the lower right might mean a production year of 1940 (it's certainly from the 1930s/early '40s).
This sign remains in good order, especially considering the increased vulnerability of the larger / heavier enamel signs. There's a little enamel loss across the face of the sign and some more around the outer edges. The white and blue enamel layers remain bright and vibrant but their surface gloss has dulled slightly. The black enamel layer retains a great gloss - see angled photos for a better understanding of this. Generally though this has to be considered an excellent example of it's type with the defects adding to the vintage character of the piece without affecting it's impact or legibility.
The sign can be hung using it's original mounting holes and measues 152.5cm high x 101.5cm wide.
