A fantastic example of a fantastic piece. This Victorian Illuminators' 'Colours and Materials' box by Windsor & Newton, London, was produced, rather specifically, for a limner - that is an illuminator of manuscripts, or more generally, a painter of ornamental decoration. The box is stocked with a selection of vibrant pigments in glass, lidded jars and the bodies for these in small glass bottles. There's also a pot of powdered silver and in the draw are leaves of gold. The box is also equipped with a range of tools, including a ceramic mixing pallet, a blower, guides and a brush for applying the gold leaf. The box remains well stocked and in fantastically original condition with colours still mixed up on the pallet! Although it's hard to be sure, I would suggest that it is largely complete.

Illuminations are typically associated with medieval manuscripts but the art form saw a resurgence in the Victorian era when the limner David Laurent de Lara established himself as a modern illuminator of manuscripts and documents. His work broke new ground and helped establish the idea of illumination as a contemporary art-form in its own right, rather than as a historical art-form. Fittingly, the box has the most fantastic, elaborate label inside the lid. A wonderful quality set, it's fitted in an equally high quality mahogany box, a drawer  to the lower section secured in place with a pin and fitted with a flush-fitting, small brass handle. Generally the box remains in very good order, although the lid has warped slightly, leaving a small lift to the right-hand side. With such a fantastic interior, I doubt it would be displayed with the lid closed!

The box measures 38.5cm wide x 8.5cm high x 23.5cm deep.
