GRANT'S CHERRY WHISKY - LITHOGRAPHIC TIN SIGN
£0
£999
This fantastically detailed lithographically printed tin sign for Grant's Cherry Whisky dates to the 1920s/'30s. It was produced by Wedekind & Co, London for Grant & Sons distillery, Maidstone.
The pictorial scene shows 'Mr Weller Senior' and 'Sam' around a table outside a public house raising a toast with a glass of the whisky. There's an opened bottle in Mr Weller's hand and another on the table ... Sam is leant on a particularly well detailed case of the whisky. To the lower left there's a captioned dialogue between the two men -
'Mr Weller, Senr.':
"Samivel my boy, Grant's Cherry Whisky is tip-top & salivating"
'Sam':
"You're right Guv'nor it's first rate if you feel bad it makes you WELLER".
Considering the age of the sign and the vulnerability of the printed metal, it would have to be considered to be in a good condition. The colours are bright and the surface even. There's a minor amount of corrosion leaching through around the outer edges, a small patch to the middle of the lower edge and a few areas of paint loss scattered across the face of the sign. Evidence of taping to the rear imply that it might've been put into a frame at one stage. The original hanging tab remains in place in the middle of the top edge.
The sign measures 32.2cm high x 25.3cm wide.
