This enamel sign for Nugget Boot Polish is a fantastic, early example. Produced by the Imperial Enamel Co. of Birmingham the sign dates from the early 1900s.
Nugget Boot Polish is cited as being one of the few brands of boot polish available in the 19th century. Nugget ran as a brand until 1929 when a merger lead to the name changing to Chiswick Products Ltd.
This sign's early production is reflected in it's quality - a heavy base metal with a thick enamel coating. The quality production means the sign has aged brilliantly - there are some small areas of enamel loss - around the 'G' + 'E' of Nugget, above the 'T' of boot and small amounts around the 'P', 'O' + 'L' of polish. However the areas of enamel loss have minimal corrosion, the edges remain good and the yellow background layer remains a rich, vibrant yellow.
The sign has been neatly mounted onto wooden batons meaning the sign is easy to hang and sits perfectly flat.
It measures 122cm wide, 61.6cm high and the sign itself is around 2mm thick and including the buttons is around 2.5cm thick.
