4FT OXO ENAMEL SIGN
£0
£999
Liebig's Extract of Meat Company introduced the trademark Oxo in 1899. Originally the liquid stock they produced was too expensive for many households, Oxo produced their first cubes in 1910 and this further increased Oxo's popularity. During World War I, 100 million Oxo cubes were provided to the British armed forces.
In the first half of the 20th century, OXO were big on brand promotion - set on making themselves a household name; In 1908, Oxo was one of the sponsors of the London Olympic Games and supplied marathon runners with Oxo drinks "to fortify them.".
In the 1920s, the company acquired a Wharf on the south bank of the river Thames in London where they erected a factory with a sizeable tower fitted with distinctive windows spelling out 'OXO' - a.k.a - The Oxo Tower!
This 4ft wide x 18" high example is likely to date to the 1920s/'30s and has the Royal Warrant and Oxo maker's mark.
It's survived the decades in good order; the colours are vibrant and it has a good surface gloss. There is some enamel loss and corrosion but nothing that impacts the legibility of the piece. It's been mounted to a basic wooden frame for ease of display and can be hung using the attached mirror plates or removed from this and mounted to the wall directly.
