This double sided glass Phillips Rubers shop sign is a fantastic example of a real rarity in the vintage advertising world.

 

This sign is likely to date to the 1920s / '30s and would likely have hung in a Cobbler's. It's a fantastic piece of advertising, with the figures merged into the bold lettering, set over an image of the globe ("World-famous" after all!). The typography and the imagery is just brilliant. Unlike other examples I've encountered in images, this hasn't been too sunbleached with the colours remaining true and punchy.

 

Originally the sign would have read; "We stock and fix - Phillips Rubbers - World-famous for Quality - High Class Shoe Repairs". At some point, this sign has had the "and fix" and "High Class Shoe Repairs" blanked out on both sides - presumably when the shop this sign was displayed in stopped with their repairs. The sign must've been opened to allow this 'blanking' and it would seem that the area with the lettering was cut out - see close up photos. There is some discolouration around these amended areas, but in my opinion this is part of the sign's history rather than 'damage'. To one side, there is a small area to the right of the 'R' of Rubbers that looks to have been repaired / touched in - whether this was during manufacture or when the sign was opened for ammendment I don't know, but again is photographed in detail. 

 

The sign remains in it's original metal frame work with hanging tabs on the upper edge - ideal for suspending from a chain so both sides can be seen or can be hung from string against a wall as per the photographs. 

 

The sign measures 58cm in diameter and 1cm thick.
