In the early 1800s, Jeremiah Colman began making mustard at a water mill near Norwich (England)... Jeremiah founded Colman's of Norwich in 1814 and by 1840 had expanded his range from just mustard to include starch and 'laundry blue' all of which were packed in containers distinctive in size, shape, label, and colour.

This enamel sign was produced nearly a century later in 1936 (has a date marker in the lower left, pictured) and we see that the company's 'distinctive' branding very much remained - the graphics are wonderfully bold and striking, complimented perfectly by the strong red, white and black colour way. Measuring in at just shy of 1m wide - this is a real statement piece and a fantastic bit of decor for any vintage themed kitchen / café / tea rooms etc. The sign has survived in decent condition, there is some nibbling and corrosion around the outer edges and a few patches of enamel loss scattered across the surface of the sign along with some surface scratches. In my opinion this adds to the character and history of the piece without affecting it's impact or legibility...

The sign has been mounted to a basic wooden frame with mirror plates attached for ease of hanging, though it could be removed from this with ease and affixed directly to the wall using the original mounting holes. The sign measures 97cm wide x 91cm high and with the wooden frame it's 1.5cm deep.
