The Coronation of Elizabeth II took place on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey, London. On that day, Bethnal Green in the East End of London saw several parties taking place on it's streets and the following day, the motorcade of the newly-crowned Elizabeth II was mobbed by cheering crowds along it's route through that part of capital city... 

 

The Bethnal Green Road Safety Committee took advantage of these unique events, using this wave of royalist pride to promote awareness of road safety "on the Queen's highway". This vibrant and quite possibly now unique poster features some wonderfully punchy and clever illustration. It shows the silhouetted crowds celebrating the Coronation below a Royal Standard flag emblazoned with a Highway's warning triangle - 'Raise the "Standard of Road Safety" too...'! 

 

The poster was designed by Floyd Studio, London W9 and printed in 1954. It's survived in decent order, there's a slight yellowing of the paper but the colours remain vibrant. The original fold lines are still visible and theres some discolouration around the left side of the central, horizontal fold line but considering this is an original piece of midcentury ephemera it presents very well. The poster has been professionally framed using conservation grade backing paper and is ready to hang. 

 

Including the frame, the poster measures 78.5cm high x 52.5cm wide.
