In 1832 Dr Henry Stephens invented an indelible 'blue-black writing fluid'... This resulted in the foundation of Stephens' Inks; a worldwide company that enjoyed over 150 years of success.
Advertising for Stephens' Inks has developed a strong following in recent years - bold typography along with the iconic ink splatter logo make this following easily understandable. Measuring in at just over 1.5m wide, this is an impressively large example of their advertising. The sign was produced by Jordan and Sons of Bilston and would appear to be dated to January of 1939.
The condition of this sign is fairly reasonable; generally it retains good colours and a good gloss, but there are a number of areas of enamel loss, most notably a couple of areas on the left of the sign where it appears to have been the victim of an air-rifle attack at some point in it's life. The sign has been mounted to a simple wooden frame with mirror plates attached for ease of hanging. It can be hung using this or removed from it and attached directly to a wall.
Over all the sign measures 153cm wide, 101.5cm high and including the wooden frame is 2cm deep.
