A.ROBERTS FURRIER - HAND PAINTED HANGING SIGN

This hand painted, double-sided hanging sign for 'A. Roberts - Manufacturing Furrier' oozes vintage charm. The sign has been competently painted on a shapely metal base and the sign-writer has justifiably credited himself in brush script in the lower right corner - 'ALFRED KEIL SIGNS BIS 4296'. 'BIS' is the old London exchange triplet of letters for Bishopsgate in the City of London. Alfred Keil Signs was based at 5 Whites Row - besides Spitalfields Market (his actual name was Angel Keil) and Mr Keil did most of the sign writing in the East End and the City during the the 1930's to the 1950's, including some of Shoreditch's iconic signage. I've been unable to find any history on A. Roberts, but he was undoubtedly an East London manufacturer and trader and this sign was probably painted in the 1940s/early '50s - a fantastic piece of history from one of the heydays of London's East End - just imagine the sights and scenes that played out with this sign swaying in the background!
Painted in a warm burgundy and cream colour-way ,the sign has aged beautifully with the sort of fading and wear that just can't be replicated - the hooks which would have allowed the sign to be hung in front of Mr. Robert's shop have worn thin in the middle - a sign of the decades it would've spent swinging gently in the breeze.
It is double-sided and one face has aged better than the other, though both remain legible. There are countless scuffs, scratches and some and areas of paint-loss, but in my opinion these add to the piece's rich patina.
The sign measures 76cm wide x 61cm high (72cm including the hooks which it can still be hung from).
