This is a particularly large and particularly early, enamel sign that would have originally adorned the shop front of Hart Ironmongers in Hasting's High Street. The sign is likely to date from the early 1900s and was produced by Orme Evans & Co. of Wolverhampton.
The sign has beautiful and very 'of the period' stylings, with a variety of wonderfully stylised typefaces as well as a simple, blue and white colour scheme. As well as having the aesthetics of an early 20th century sign it also has the quality - a heavy base metal and thick enamel layers.
The sign is in relatively good condition considering it's age, there is a small section missing from each of the lower corners, mainly the lower left and a few small areas of enamel loss. There is some surface scratching and a few areas of discolouration along the upper edge. Despite this though the sign makes a great, feature piece that hangs well and has lots of lovely details.
The sign is 1.83m wide, 61cm high and around 2mm thick.
